My firstborn is enrolling in secretarial school! I’m sure that for some of you, this would be no big deal. It is for us because all of our kids were homeschooled – all the way through.
Due to her increasing debt load, DD27 (she’ll be 28 in August) decided a couple of weeks ago to look for a new job. She was quickly hired by a new electronics store in town. Or, almost. She thought that the job paid $10.80 an hour, which would have been $2.30 more than she’s making now, for a lot less responsibility.
Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?
Yup, that’s what we thought. Turns out it’s a “straight commission” job. Selling washers and dryers. That should explain why they had to hire someone new, when they’ve only been open 3 weeks.
When she told her current employer that she would be leaving, they asked her to stay. Mind you, she’d already told them she wanted more to do. When asked if she would consider staying, she told them, “Not for less than $10.00 an hour”. They offered her a position half-way between where she is, and the department manager position.
For $0.35 cents more an hour. For the math-challenged of you, that means they offered $8.85 an hour.
What would you do?
To leave could be financial suicide, if nothing turns up (since she has no savings). To stay would mean her word is worthless.
I spent the morning a few days ago trolling the job listings for her. Found a few things. Applied at a couple of places. That’s when she decided she wanted to go to school.
Thursday morning she was able to rescind her resignation. She plans to go to school full-time at night, work 8:30-5:00 M-F and one Sunday a month, and still have a life.
