I took a risk this week. After reading a fellow-blogger’s description of how freeing it was to clear off his kitchen counters, I took a leap and followed suit. DH was so excited he took out the trash and the recycling and then he cleaned the floor!
What’s left on the counters? The green stand mixer, the 2-4 cup white coffeemaker, the stainless steel microwave oven, the white toaster, a wooden knife block and a crystal pitcher.
Since DD27 only joins us a few days a week, three of anything are all we “need”. So I culled the superfluous utensils from the drawer and set them aside for whichever daughter needs to outfit a kitchen next. Silverware extras are in a basket in the cupboard of “stuff we need when we are all together”.
Last year I used some of my birthday money to buy two place settings of the dishes I like, along with two iced tea glasses and two water glasses. Now I smile when I sit down to the table for a meal.
As the mom, I know that I will still need to keep platters and such on hand for extended family holiday meals.
But I don’t need to see them every day.
Next stop, the cupboards. . .
